MEGOLON halogen-free compounds combine low smoke and halogen-free properties with other useful functionalities such as oil resistance, radiation tolerance, flexibility, and more.  

MEGOLON compounds meet tough flame tests for electrical cables including CPR B2, while supporting demanding processing requirements for thin-wall cables with minimal die drool and fast line speeds. 

Since testing is conducted on the cable, not the compound, material selection is dependent on the entire cable design.

MEGOLON is a globally recognized halogen-free, low smoke compound

Cable designers around the world recognize MEGOLON as capable sheathing / jacketing material for copper and fiber optic cable designs including communications, power, energy, control, industrial automation, hybrid, and specialty cables.  In general, formulations are composed of polymers and co-polymers of olefins filled with mineral fillers to provide the desired level of flame retardance.  They contain appropriately selected antioxidants to provide the desired level of stability, and processing additives to aid extrusion performance.  

MEGOLON compounds are characterized by their low smoke emissions and absence of halogens (many grades recognized under UL AATJ2) -- significantly reducing the release of toxic gasses during combustion.  This feature makes them suitable for use in environments where safety and fire prevention are critical, including transportation systems, datacenters, and dense public spaces. 

 

While MEGOLON is well established for halogen-free cable extrusion, the portfolio also includes molding grades for injection molded components. These materials enable manufacturers to maintain a halogen-free solution throughout the cable assembly, including molded parts such as cable shrouds and protective accessories.

Suitable for Global Flame Tests and UL Recognized

MEGOLON grades are suitable for cables that must pass strict Construction Products Regulation (CPR), National Electrical Code (NEC) and Canadian Standards Association (CSA), including:

  • European Construction Products Regulation (CPR) performance rankings (B2 to E)

  • U.S. National Electrical Code (NEC) flame tests up to UL 1666 riser

  • Canadian Standards Association (CSA) FT4 Vertical Flame Test

MEGOLON is also recognized under the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) AATJ2 program, certifying that grades are halogen-free (acid-gas content).
